ATHLETIC PROGRAMS

Socially, sports provide excellent educational opportunities because many of the social and moral requirements for participation in sports are parallel to how individuals must function in a law-abiding society.

If the discretionary time of youth is not devoted to positive skill-building activities (for example the ability to participate in games and sports), then the potential for involvement in socially unacceptable behavior is increased.

The Palmetto Youth Center has more than 400 youth enrolled in football, cheerleading, basketball, and baseball. Also we are constantly exploring other athletic opportunities.

TROJAN Football – This program is for children ages 5-15 years olds. The 5-7 year olds can choose between flag or tackle while youngsters 8-15 compete in tackle only that is divided into various age groups.

Locally we are members of the Foundation for Youth Development league which is a member of the national Pop Warner little Scholars association. It is held from August – December.

Fees: $50 annually

TROJAN Cheer/Dance – We offer cheer/dance to children 5-15 years old.

They also are divided into various age groups some of which are cheer squads while others form dance teams. This program is also part of Pop Warner little Scholars association.

It is designed to provide a positive alternative for working parents and is operational from 6:30 am until 6:00 pm., Monday through Friday.

The camp begins in June and concludes in August.  Lunch is provided to the children from the USDA food program.  It is the goals of the Palmetto Youth Center staff to help participants improve motor skills, learn to make responsible decisions, build self-esteem and stimulate creativity.

Instructors supervise indoor and outdoor free play periods, games and any other social activities.

Children also take part in extra-curricular activities in the form of weekly field trips which include skating, visits to the library and the court system, swimming and major out of town trips which may include Disney World, Lowry Park Zoo, Celebration Station, Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Restaurant, Adventure Island, Pirate Cove and Ice skating.
